Alexandre de Riquer
" Illustrator, painter and poet. He is considered to be one of the most important representatives of Catalan Modernism."
Spain's most successful exponent of the Art Nouveau style inspired by Grasset and Mucha.
He was born in Calaf, Barcelona in 1856 to an aristocratic family, the Counts of Casa Dávalos. He studied in Manresa, and later in Béziers, France, where his family had moved in 1869. From 1873 to 1874 he attended the Fine Arts School in Toulouse, France, which is when he produced his first paintings. He returned to Barcelona in 1874 to continue studying at the La Llotja School. During this first stage of training, he travelled around several European cities to become familiar with the various artistic movements in vogue. An important stop on his journey was his stay in England in 1884, where he made contact with the pre-Raphaelites. As an artist, he was extremely restless and had many facets: designer, sketcher, engraver and poet. He died in Palma de Mallorca in 1920.
